Due to specimen stability, patients can be drawn Monday – Thursday only. For questions, call the Laboratory at 800-551-0488.

Specimen Collection Criteria

Collect: One Lavender-top EDTA tube.

Send specimen for processing immediately after collection. 

Physician Office/Draw Specimen Preparation

Do not centrifuge. Maintain whole blood specimen refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F) prior to transport.

Preparation for Courier Transport

Transport: 4.0 mL whole blood, refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F). (Minimum: 2.5 mL)

Rejection Criteria

  • Frozen specimens.
  • Lipemic Specimens.
  • Hemolyzed specimens.
  • Specimens not collected and processed as indicated.

In-Lab Processing

Abnormally low activities may indicate exposure to certain insecticides.

Clinical Utility

Red cell cholinesterase is most often used to detect past exposure to organophosphate insecticides with resultant inhibition of the enzyme.
