Clinical Utility

This assay aids in the diagnosis of protein-losing enteropathy. The recommended assay for this diagnosis is the alpha-1-antitrypsin clearance (feces and serum). In the absence of a 24-hour stool collection and/or a contemporary serum specimen, the fecal concentration of alpha-1-antitrypsin can be used as a plasma marker. The clearance is preferred in order to normalize the large range of serum alpha-1-antitrypsin concentrations.
