When it comes to health, we can achieve something better. From discovering new ways to treat troubling conditions to prevention of diseases before they start, we believe progress should never stop.

Test Codes

EPIC: LAB5046, EXHEA

Department

Chemistry

Instructions

  • Blood should be obtained with as little venous stasis (i.e. tourniquet time) as possible. Fist clenching may result in a false elevation of potassium and prolonged tourniquet time may cause an increase in total calcium.
  • It is recommended that the patient fast for 9-12 hours prior to blood draw.

Specimen Collection Criteria

Collect: One Gold-top SST tube. (Minimum Whole Blood: 4.0 mL)

Caution: Never refrigerate collection tube prior to centrifugation. This may cause a falsely elevated potassium.

Rejection Criteria

  • Moderate to grossly hemolyzed specimens.
  • Inadequately centrifuged Microtainers® or Gold-top tubes.
  • Red-top tubes with serum not separated from cells within two hours of collection.

In-Lab Processing

Let SST specimens clot 30-60 minutes. Centrifuge SST tubes or Microtainers® to separate serum from cells. Deliver immediately to the appropriate testing station.
