Clinical Utility
This assay is used as a second order test in the evaluation of individuals with chronic hemolysis. Erythrocyte glucose phosphate isomerase (GPI) deficiency is a common cause of chronic hemolysis. GPI is an autosomal recessive trait. Hemolytic disease of the newborn is a common presenting manifestation of GPI deficiency.
