Instructions

Due to specimen stability, patients can be collected Monday – Thursday morning only.

Can also be collected Friday morning with prior Approval.

 

Specimen Collection Criteria

Collect (preferred specimen): Gastric Biopsy in sterile container moistened with sterile saline.

Also acceptable: Gastric brushing or gastric aspirate in a sterile container.

Physician Office/Draw Specimen Preparation

Maintain specimen in original collection tube, refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F) prior to transport.

Preparation for Courier Transport

Transport: Gastric Biopsy in sterile container MOISTENED with sterile saline, refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F) in original collection tube. Do not saturate the tissue.

Rejection Criteria

  • Specimens that do NOT arrive at Mayo Medical Laboratories within 48 hours.
  • Specimens not collected and processed as indicated.
  • Specimens that are saturated with saline.

Storage

Specimen Stability for Testing:

Room temperature (20-26°C or 68-78.8°F): Unacceptable
Refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F): 48 hours
Frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below): Unacceptable

Specimen Storage in Department Prior to Disposal:

Specimen retention time is determined by the policy of the reference laboratory. Contact the Send Outs Laboratory with any questions.
