Instructions

HIV 1/2 RAPID OB tests can only be ordered for pregnant women in Labor and Delivery at a Beaumont Hospital Campus with an unknown/undocumented HIV status.

Specimen Collection Criteria

Collect: One Gold-top SST tube. (Minimum Whole Blood: 5.0 mL)

Send specimen STAT to the STAT Laboratory (Royal Oak) or Chemistry Laboratory (Farmington Hills, Grosse Pointe and Troy) immediately after collection.

Rejection Criteria

Hemolyzed specimens.

Severely lipemic specimens.

In-Lab Processing

Let SST specimens clot then immediately centrifuge to separate serum from cells. Deliver STAT to the appropriate testing station.

Test Methodology

Chemiluminescence Immunoassay. Immunochromatography.

Interpretation

This is a RAPID screening test for HIV 1/2 antibodies and HIV-1 p24 Antigen. All positive test results will be reported as Preliminary Positive. A preliminary positive will be confirmed by the current 4th generation assay and when necessary additional confirmation procedures. In accordance with recent CDC guidelines, Western Blot will NOT be performed.

Clinical Utility

This RAPID HIV 1/2 test is used to assay serum from pregnant women who have unknown or undocumented HIV status. Test results should be made available to ordering physicians within 2 hours. The name and page number of the physician to be contacted with the results must be documented in the collection comment field.
