Mycobacterium chimaera Culture

Instructions

Swabs are not acceptable for any type of Mycobacterial culture.

This test can only be collected at the Royal Oak campus, Monday – Thursday, between the hours of 7:00 am – 12:00 pm.

Specimen Collection Criteria

Collect:

• One 10 mL (adult) Isolator tube (preferred) or one 1.5 mL (pediatric) Isolator tube.

Transport specimen to the Laboratory immediately after collection.

Physician Office/Draw Specimen Preparation

Isolator tubes must be stored at room temperature (20-26°C or 68-78.8°F).

Preparation for Courier Transport

Transport:Isolator tubes must be transported at room temperature (20-26°C or 68-78.8°F).

Rejection Criteria

Specimens not collected and processed as indicated.

In-Lab Processing

Do not centrifuge, refrigerate, or freeze specimens. Maintain specimens in original collection tubes and transport immediately to the Laboratory.

Storage

Room Temperature (20-26°C or 68-78.8°F): Isolator tubes-16 hours
Refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F): Unacceptable
Frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below): Unacceptable

Specimen Storage in Department Prior to Disposal:

Specimen retention time is determined by the policy of the reference laboratory. Contact the Send Outs Laboratory with any questions.

Laboratory

Sent to Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), Lansing, MI.

Performed

Monday – Friday.
Results available in 8 weeks for negative culture.

Reference Range

No Acid Fast Bacilli recovered.
