Also acceptable: Amniotic fluid, Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF), Synovial Fluid, paraffin-embedded tissue, or fresh tissue.
Specimen source is required.
Physician Office/Draw Specimen Preparation
- Centrifuge to separate plasma or serum from cells. Transfer serum or plasma to a plastic transport tube and freeze (-20°C/-4°F or below).
- Maintain fluid specimens frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below) prior to transport.
- Fresh tissue must be frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below) immediately.
- Paraffin-embedded tissue should be maintained at room temperature (20-26°C or 68-78.8°F).
Preparation for Courier Transport
Transport: 1.0 mL serum, plasma, fluid, or fresh tissue, frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below), or paraffin-embedded tissue, at room temperature (20-26°C or 68-78.8°F). (Minimum: 0.5 mL)
Rejection Criteria
- Heparinized specimens.
- Frozen whole blood.
- Bone marrow specimens.
- Specimens in non-sterile or leaking containers.
- Specimens not collected and processed as indicated.
In-Lab Processing
- Centrifuge to separate plasma or serum from cells. Transfer serum or plasma to a plastic transport tube and freeze (-20°C/-4°F or below).
- Maintain fluid specimens frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below) prior to transport.
- Fresh tissue must be frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below) immediately.
- Paraffin-embedded tissue should be maintained at room temperature (20-26°C or 68-78.8°F).
Transport: 1.0 mL serum, plasma, fluid, or fresh tissue, frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below), or paraffin-embedded tissue, at room temperature (20-26°C or 68-78.8°F). (Minimum: 0.5 mL)

Specimen Storage in Department Prior to Disposal:
Specimen retention time is determined by the policy of the reference laboratory. Contact the Send Outs Laboratory with any questions.
Laboratory
Sent to ARUP Laboratories, Salt Lake City, UT.
Performed
Monday, Wednesday, Friday.
Results available in 2-5 days.
Reference Range
Negative: Parvovirus B19 DNA not detected by PCR.
Positive: Parvovirus B19 DNA detected by PCR.
Test Methodology
Qualitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR).
Interpretation
- A negative result does not rule out the presence of PCR inhibitors in the patient specimen or Parvovirus DNA in concentrations below the level of detection of the assay.
- This test is performed pursuant to an agreement with Roche Molecular Systems, Inc.
