Instructions
- The Platelet Antigen Typing Panel will only be performed after a normal result for Platelet Glycoprotein Polymorphism Analysis (PL A1/A2).
- If a patient has received a whole blood or platelet transfusion, wait 24 hours before drawing sample. Please indicate on the requisition when the patient received the most recent transfusion.
- Please provide patient's platelet count on requisition, if known.
Specimen Collection Criteria
Collect:
- Whole Blood: Two Lavender-top EDTA tubes.
- Fetal Specimen: 15 mL of amniotic fluid, 5x106 amniocytes cultured fresh, or cord blood.
Physician Office/Draw Specimen Preparation
Maintain whole blood or fetal specimens at room temperature (20-26°C or 68-78.8°F) prior to transport.
Preparation for Courier Transport
Transport: Whole blood or fetal specimens, at room temperature (20-26°C or 68-78.8°F).
Rejection Criteria
Specimens not collected and processed as indicated.
In-Lab Processing
Maintain whole blood or fetal specimens at room temperature (20-26°C or 68-78.8°F) prior to transport.

Storage
Specimen Stability for Testing:
Room Temperature (20-26°C or 68-78.8°F): 96 hours
Refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F): 96 hours
Frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below): Unacceptable

Interpretation
Platelet Antigen Typing (Level 1,2, and 3).
- Level 1 must be done before Level 2 or 3 can be ordered.
- Level 1 includes: PlA1/A2, Bra/b, Baka antigens.
- Level 2 includes: Bakb, Koa/b, Pena/b antigens.
- Level 3 includes: Caa/b antigens.
Clinical Utility
If this assay is ordered alone the clinical significance is up to the doctor. This assay is usually ordered as a panel with other tests to rule out post-transfusion purpura or neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia.
