Specimen Collection Criteria

Collect: Body fluid (pericardial, peritoneal, or pleural) in a sterile collection container.

  • Specimen source is required.
  • Send specimen for processing immediately after collection.

Physician Office/Draw Specimen Preparation

Centrifuge body fluid immediately after collection. Transfer supernatant to a plastic transport tube and freeze (-20°C/-4°F or below).

Preparation for Courier Transport

Transport: 0.3 mL fluid supernatant, frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below). (Minimum: 0.1 mL)

Rejection Criteria

  • Turbid specimens.
  • Specimens that have been frozen and thawed.
  • Specimens not collected and processed as indicated.

In-Lab Processing

Centrifuge body fluid immediately after collection. Transfer supernatant to a plastic transport tube and freeze (-20°C/-4°F or below).

Transport: 0.3 mL fluid supernatant, frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below). (Minimum: 0.1 mL)

Specimen Stability for Testing:

Room Temperature (20-26°C or 68-78.8°F): 2 hours
Refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F): 7 days
Frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below): 1 month

Pleural Fluid: 0.0 - 9.4 U/L.

Quantitative Spectrophotometry.

Interpretation

Performance characteristics for specimen types other than pericardial, peritoneal, or pleural fluid are unknown. Reference ranges have not been established for alternate sources.
