Instructions

Due to specimen stability, patients should be drawn Monday – Thursday only. For questions, call the Laboratory at 800-551-0488.

  • Patient should abstain from alcohol for 24 hours prior to specimen collection.
  • Include a list of medications the patient is currently taking and forward with the specimen.

Specimen Collection Criteria

Collect (preferred specimen): One Dark Green-top Sodium Heparin tube. (Minimum: 3.0 mL)
Also acceptable: One Dark Green-top Lithium Heparin or Lavender-top EDTA tube.

  • Collect and transport specimen on ice.
  • Send specimens for processing immediately after collection.

Physician Office/Draw Specimen Preparation

Do not centrifuge. Maintain whole blood specimen refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F) prior to transport.

Preparation for Courier Transport

Transport: Whole blood, refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F) or on wet ice. (Minimum: 3.0 mL)

Rejection Criteria

  • Hemolyzed specimens.
  • Specimens not collected and processed as indicated.

Inpatient Specimen Preparation

Deliver specimen to the Laboratory, on ice, immediately after collection.

In-Lab Processing

Do not centrifuge. Maintain whole blood specimen refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F) prior to transport. The specimen must be received at Mayo Medical Laboratories within 48 hours of collection.

Transport: Whole blood, refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F) or on wet ice. (Minimum: 3.0 mL)

Specimen Stability for Testing:

Room Temperature (20-26°C or 68-78.8°F): Unacceptable
Refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F): 96 hours
Frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below): Unacceptable

Specimen Storage in Department Prior to Disposal:

Specimen retention time is determined by the policy of the reference laboratory. Contact the Send Outs Laboratory with any questions.
