Instructions

For patients receiving therapy with high biotin doses (e.g. greater than 5 mg/day), specimen should not be drawn until at least 8 hours after the last biotin administration.

Specimen Collection Criteria

Collect (preferred specimen): One Gold-top SST tube.
Also acceptable: One plain Red-top tube or Dark Green-top Lithium Heparin tube.

Send specimen to the Laboratory for processing immediately after collection.

Note: Patient Preparation: Twenty-four (24) hours before this test, the patient should not take multivitamins or dietary supplements containing biotin (vitamin B7) which is commonly found in hair, skin and nail supplements and multivitamins.

Physician Office/Draw Specimen Preparation

Centrifuge to separate serum or plasma from cells within two hours of collection. Transfer serum or plasma to a plastic transport tube and freeze (-20°C/-4°F or below) within 8 hours of collection.

Preparation for Courier Transport

Transport: 1.0 mL serum or plasma, frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below). (Minimum: 0.5 mL)

Rejection Criteria

  • Hemolyzed specimens.
  • Specimens not collected and processed as indicated.

In-Lab Processing

Centrifuge to separate serum or plasma from cells within two hours of collection. Transfer serum or plasma to a plastic transport tube and freeze (-20°C/-4°F or below) within 8 hours of collection.

Transport: 1.0 mL serum or plasma, frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below). (Minimum: 0.5 mL)

Specimen Stability for Testing:

Room Temperature (20-26°C or 68-78.8°F): 4 hours
Refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F): 8 hours
Frozen (-20°C/-4°F or below): 3 months

Specimen Storage in Department Prior to Disposal:
