Rejection Criteria

Plasma specimens.

Severely hemolyzed, lipemic or icteric specimens. 

In-Lab Processing

Let specimen clot 30-60 minutes then immediately centrifuge to separate serum from cells. Room temperature is acceptable for a maximum of two hours. (Minimum Serum: 0.5 mL)

Interpretation

Histone antibodies are present in 20-55% of idiopathic SLE and 80-95% in drug induced SLE. They occur in less than 20% of other types of connective tissue diseases.

Clinical Utility

The histone antibody assay aids in the diagnosis of SLE.
