Specimen Collection Criteria
Collect (preferred specimen): Two Gold-top SST tubes.
Also acceptable: Two plain Red-top tubes.
Physician Office/Draw Specimen Preparation
Let specimen clot 30-60 minutes then centrifuge to separate serum from cells within one hour of collection. Transfer serum to a plastic transport tube and refrigerate (2-8°C or 36-46°F).
Preparation for Courier Transport
Transport: 4.0 mL serum, refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F). (Minimum: 2.0 mL)
Rejection Criteria
Hemolyzed, icteric, or lipemic samples.
Specimens not collected and processed as indicated.
In-Lab Processing

Clinical Utility
Antibodies to insulin and pancreatic proteins may be used to differentiate type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Radioimmunoprecipitation assays with recombinant antigens assure assay sensitivity and specificity. Testing for multiple markers increases diagnostic sensitivity to 98% and increases positive predictive value of the tests.
